THIRTEEN

Rachel was playing the piano about 4:00 in the afternoon on a late September day when suddenly she became aware of a presence in the music room. Her glance darted from the music to the figure who stood just inside the door from the entry hall.

“Daddy!” she exclaimed as she jumped up from the piano bench.

“Don’t stop, Baby, hearing that old piano is the most beautiful sound I can imagine. I had no idea you could play like that.”

“Well, you paid for enough lessons. You ought to know.” Shyly Rachel walked over to him and gave him a tentative hug. “Why on earth didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

“You would have said ‘no.’ ” He leaned over and kissed her forehead, and Rachel did her best not to stiffen.

“I couldn’t stay away any longer,” he admitted. “For heaven’s sake, I haven’t seen you in four months!”

“I know,” Rachel glanced at the floor, “it’s just—”

“You don’t have to explain. I know you’ve needed time, but I got selfish. That’s about the truth of it; I just had to see if you’re okay.”

“Well, what do you think?” she looked him in the face and smiled.

“Outside looks great. What about the inside?”

“It’s coming along,” Rachel murmured hurriedly and quickly changed the subject. “You must be ready for something cool to drink. I’ll call Lovey.”

“No, don’t bother her. I just had a Coke, and I’ve got to go see a couple of planters who are leasing some of the fields. Just dropped by to say I’m here and I’ll be back for supper.” He kissed her on the forehead again before he turned to go, “I’ll see you in a couple of hours, and we’ll have a chat over some of Lovey’s cooking.” He turned and strode out of the room so fast Rachel stood there for a moment wondering if she had imagined the whole incident. Then she went to tell Lovey who exclaimed, “I just knew this gonna be a good day! And here Mr. Jack done come home.”

Rachel wasn’t so sure it was a good day.

After supper that evening Rachel hastily left the dining room thinking that she would escape upstairs to be alone. Through the entire meal she had made superficial, socially acceptable conversation with her father. It had been such a bizarre experience for she had spent so little time with him these last eight years he was like a stranger to her and yet he was as familiar as her own face. Confused feelings had welled up in her as she sat there graciously passing dishes to her father and talking about his business and family and friends they had in Texas, talking about everything that was unimportant to her. It was her way of escaping the storm that had been brewing inside of her for as long as she could remember.

So as soon as the formality of supper had been endured, she said good night to her father and walked through the music room with the idea of going upstairs to bury herself in a book.
