Chapter 11

Secrets

At dawn, Sheriff Havoc arrived at the jail house to let the two young men out as promised. Both sat slumped and droopy eyed on the bunk, and the bruises and swelling were showing up clearly in the dim lamplight.

“Good morning. Who’s ready to get out of here?” he asked cheerfully as he entered the jail house. Vic sat up and rubbed his bloodshot eyes.

“I am!” Vic snapped. “These two were chewing the fat all night. Couldn’t get a wink of sleep.” Vic thrust on his boots and left, grabbing his hat in a huff. “See you later,” he said, thick with sarcasm.

“See ya,” Sheriff Havoc said, avoiding further discussion as Vic slammed the door behind him. He shrugged and retrieved the cell keys and unlocked the cell. “Okay, you’re free to go. And no more fighting,” he said, unlocking the rusty iron door. “Bart, you find the next train leaving for Missouri. You hear?” Sheriff Havoc pulled on the heavy metal door, swinging it wide and stood back, letting them pass.

“Sure,” Bart said as he shuffled sleepily out of the cell, pulling on his suit coat, followed closely by Clancy. “Hey, Clancy! Can I buy you a cup of coffee before you head to work?” Bart cordially asked as he ran his fingers through his hair and put on his hat.

“You bet! I’d appreciate that. There’s a place on the corner that serves coffee that’ll put hair on your chest,” Clancy said, slapping Bart agreeably on the back as he opened the front door and breathed in the crisp morning air.

Sheriff Havoc shook his head. “What in the world happened last night?” he wondered as they left.

“Hey Clancy, hold up! Give me a minute; I need to say something to the sheriff.” Bart turned back and reentered the jail house. “Look, I’m still pretty mad at the fact that Cassie doesn’t want me and she wants you.” Bart shook his head in disbelief. “I don’t get it, but if that’s what she wants, there’s nothing more I can do. Her mind is made up.” Bart kept his eyes level with Sheriff Havoc’s. “I messed up and missed my chance with her. Let me get one thing straight,” Bart pointed his finger as he spoke with force, “you better treat her right. Cassie’s a very special girl and I hope you realize what you’ve got and don’t spoil it. I do want what’s best for her…whatever that may be. I wish I had been able to tell her myself, but maybe you can tell her for me. I don’t want her to feel bad. It’s my fault, I never gave her a chance to tell me how she really felt. I just assumed that she would be happy and grow to love me. But you’ll not get any more grief from me. I’ll leave her alone.” Bart looked at the floor and cleared his throat, carefully touching his swollen eye. “And thanks for not hitting me, I would have deserved it after the way I’ve behaved.
