Do you have a favorite superhero? If you asked twenty people, Superman would probably come out on top. What’s not to like about the Man of Steel? He’s faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive, and able to fly around the world at supersonic speed. He’s about as all-powerful as you can get. Nothing can hurt him … well, except for kryptonite. He has X-ray vision, a Boy Scout mentality for doing good, and hair that never seems out of place (even when he’s flying). Plus, his motto can’t be beat: “Truth, justice, and the American way.”

But there’s even more to love. He was sent to earth from a far-off world by his father to save mankind. His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph*, did their best to raise him, but they always knew he had a special destiny to fulfill. When the world needed him most, he left his home, struggled alone in the wilderness, and began his public service at age thirty.

Hold up! you may be thinking. That sounds like Jesus, not Superman. And you’re right. Since the 1930s, many characteristics of Jesus Christ have been incorporated into the red-caped wonder. Even Superman’s real name, Jor-El, has significance, because El is the Hebrew word for God.
