Chapter Eighteen

Caroline studied the online catalog of Belles, still in shock at the appraisal of her jewelry. Lucky had paid so much less for two original designs by a well-known designer.

She still couldn’t believe it, but Lucky had studied the items with a practiced eye. Aware of what she was getting, she’d bought them without hesitation.

The pieces were listed in the catalog as part of the store’s fall romance collection in a sub-category called “forever love.” Both were listed as sold while there were six other items in the collection of pearl, diamond, and platinum pieces.

Her phone rang as she logged off her laptop in preparation for recording grades from assignments she’d managed to get graded in the last hour. She reached for her cell and glanced at the display.

Caroline didn’t recognize the number and decided not to answer. Her mind wandered to the note. She’d dropped it by the police station on her way home, but only after contacting Jax who’d told her to take a picture of it for him.

The phone rang again, and she looked at it to find her mother’s number there. She hit CONNECT.

“Hello, Mother,” she said warily.

“Caroline, are you at home?”

“Yes, why?” she asked carefully. She’d had her locks changed in the last few months because her mother had a key. She hadn’t wanted her barging in whenever she got ready.

“I’d like to come up. The guard said he couldn’t allow it without your permission.”

“Fine. Tell him I said it was okay.”

“He needs to hear it from you,” Margret said in an annoyed tone. “I’ll put it on speaker.”

“Gerald?”

“Yes, ma’am?”

“You can let my mother up,” she said. “It’s okay.”

“I’ll let her come right up,” he said. “Enjoy your evening, ma’am.”

“You, too.” She ended the call and closed the lid of her computer. She’d add the grades later after her mother left.

Caroline thought about putting on some coffee, but then decided against it. Her mother was more than likely there to level some new threat at her not a social call.

When the doorbell rang, Caroline made her way over to open it. Her mother stood on the other side clad in a black sheath dress with her hair neatly arranged in curls.

“Good evening, Mother,” she said motioning her in.

Margret swept her gaze over her in her simple dress and bare feet.

“I’m surprised you’re alone,” she said. “That’s a very nice necklace.”

“I heard it was a Mya Belle original.”

Margret gave her a skeptical look. “Neither you nor Kane would know the difference between a cheap knock-off and the real thing,” she said caustically. “She’s a military brat with no real breeding.”

“Is that why you’re here, Mother?”

“Actually, I came by to evict you,” Margret retorted. “Your father and I paid for this apartment and moved you into it, so you’d be in a nice neighborhood without the strain on your finances. However, since you insist on doing things your way, you need to find your own place to live.”

Caroline frowned. “I don’t have time to loo—”

“You better make time or start doing as you’re told,” Margret said.
