When Is a Pacemaker Needed?

The doctor may recommend a pacemaker if the person has:

•fatigue, lightheadedness, or fainting from a low heart rate;

•inability to exercise because the heart rate does not increase enough during exercise; or

•damage to the electrical system of the heart during heart valve surgery.

What Is a Pacemaker? How Does It Work?

A permanent (artificial) pacemaker has two parts:

•A pulse generator: A small metal container with a battery and electrical circuitry. It goes under the skin next to the left or right shoulder and controls the electrical activity of the heart. Sometimes it is called a pacemaker or battery.

•Leads and electrodes: Wires that travel from the pulse generator to the heart. They connect the heart to the electrical circuitry in the pulse generator.
