Chapter Eleven

Collen had a full morning of meetings, which included one with Peta. She hadn’t been too happy about being replaced by Nichols, but he hadn’t had time to cater to her hurt feelings. He’d sent her off to take up her new post as security manager of the west sector of the den, then he had a house showing.

He and Dawg owned a real estate company in addition to the other things they did. It was eleven when a rap at his office door drew his attention from the papers he was studying.

“Come in.”

“Hey.” Dalton stepped into his office. “I know we were supposed to meet at my place, but I thought since I was in the area I may as well stop by.”

Collen motioned to a chair. “Give me a minute,” he said. “I need to finish this up, so I can get them to the client later.”

Dalton waited for ten minutes before he said, “How’s the wolf?”

“He’s more a mystery to me in some ways than he was before,” he admitted with a frown. “He might have been a problem, but I can’t stay away from him.”

“What makes you think he was a problem?” He frowned.

“E-mail that might lead us to a mole,” Collen answered.

“You found this e-mail, or did he show it to you?”

“He showed me, but it was after we fought about it, and he accused me—forget what he accused me of.”

“The last time I saw you with him, he carried your scent. That was barely…what, a few days before the attempt on his life?” Dalton shrugged. “Hell, Ashcroft and I didn’t want to say anything because you obviously aren’t ready to accept it, but we’re both sure he mated you.”

“That’s not how it works with anyone but you damned panthers,” Collen muttered, swiping a hand through his hair in irritation. He knew it was possible. There were no real hard-and-fast rules to mating. It was emotional, not sexual, so a powerful bond could form between two mates before they even had sex. That was how it usually happened.

“The bond isn’t about sex, and you know it,” Dalton murmured. “Sex, knotting a mate, only enhances the emotional bond.”

“Look, this isn’t about mating,” he said coldly. That would explain how they’d been in synch. He’d developed strong feelings for Taylan, but Taylan could have fallen for him faster.

“You’re pretty much all he remembers,” Dalton replied. “He knew the bond was there even if you didn’t, and he held onto it and when you pulled him out of the water, you were obviously holding on to it, too.”

“Enough about that,” Collen muttered. “The reason I wanted to meet with you was to talk about the hits being organized on me and Ashcroft again. The lions are planning to move in after the hits on us and takeover.”

“With the main den taken out of the equation, both of our dens will be compromised, especially since we still have no idea how many traitors we are working against from inside,” Dalton murmured.
