CHAPTER 16

THEY PLODDED along through the fields slowly, neither of them in any hurry. They certainly didn’t race their mounts back to Barkirk the way they had raced out. They were simply content to walk along, making small talk and also discussing weightier subjects. Alec pointed out various features of the land to her and cringed, hearing himself speak, as if he was desperately trying to sell her on the idea of staying in Scotland rather than make the trip back to Fortershire.

Though it was somewhat awkward to talk about in the beginning, Alec was glad they had taken the time to talk and to clear the air between them. It was good that their feelings were out there–even if neither of them knew exactly what those feelings were at the moment. But he was glad they had at least opened a line of communication with one another about the subject. It would likely make it easier on them when–and if–they discussed it later.

She is an amazing lass, that one. She’s what me Faither would call a keeper, for certain. And I would if she’d let me.

Grace stirred him up inside in ways that rattled him but ways that left him feeling excitedly breathless all at the same time. She spun him about faster than a maelstrom on open water and left him feeling lightheaded. As disconcerting as it could be, Alec could not say the feeling was entirely unpleasant. Strange and uncomfortable but not unpleasant.

“Thank you for today. For showing me this part of your world over these past few days actually,” Grace said. “I fear I have run out of words, but today was amazing.”

“Ye’re welcome,” he replied. “I thought ye might want tae see that Scotland’s nae without its charms.”

“I can see that,” she replied. “I have never seen a land as beautiful as this.”

“Wait ‘til we get tae thae Highlands. ”They rode on in silence for a little while. As he led her on a more scenic route, they passed through a copse of trees and he could see that Grace had tensed up. She was scanning the growing gloom on the floor of the forest, her eyes darting this way and that. Alec laughed heartily and looked at her.

“Ye know thae Bodach is a children’s story?”

Grace cleared her throat. “O…of course I do,” she said stiffly. “I am not afraid of the Bodach. It is just that forests are replete with any number of wild, vicious beasts.”

“Uh huh. Daenae worry, if that bleedin’, black-hearted beast shows his face, I’ll take care of ‘im for ye.”

Grace smiled and even in the light that was growing dimmer by the minute, he could see the color flaring in her cheeks. She was so beautiful that the longing and desire inside of him that she inspired made it almost painful to look at her. He thought it was crazy that Grace was able to twist him up and turn him about the way she did. And what made it worse to him was that she did not even have to try.
