* * * *

Stanos brought Wade soup and fed him spoonfuls. He cared for him as he would a sick child, and gradually Wade began to feel better.

"Where's Sue?" Wade asked, remembering the blonde-haired girl.

"She's gone," Stanos said. "Don't think about her."

But Wade did. He had nothing better to do. Gradually it began to come back to him--the room, Sue's naked body, and what he had done to her. Wade crawled to the length of his chain and vomited. He saw himself clearly. He had murdered a woman, worse than that, he had brutally used her, raped her. The words turned him cold. Rapist! That was something he would never do, not in a million years, never! Was it only a bad dream? A nightmare? No, something told him it was real.

When he told Cassandra he didn't want to become a vampire, that he didn't want to kill, she had forced him. He remembered Cassandra compelling him to drink from the goblet, rubbing his penis with an ointment. Voodoo, she had called it. Voodoo had made him do whatever she wanted.

Tears came to his eyes. Tears of hopelessness and fear. He saw what he had become. He'd thought he loved Cassandra, that she loved him. It had never been love, never. It had all been about control. Cassandra had controlled him completely, making him do--oh, what he had done. All the horror came spewing up and he vomited until the dry heaves shaking his body was the only thing that remained.

He wanted to purge himself of all that was Cassandra.

He wanted to die.

He curled up in a tight ball and cried, hugging himself, rocking back and forth, tears streaming down his face. What he had done to that poor girl, that poor frightened girl. He should have been stronger, resisted. Even if Cassandra had forced him, he was to blame,

He remembered something that his father used to say. "Even if bad things happen to you, you have the choice. You don't have to let them make you bad." He had a choice. He had done some bad things, but he didn't have to let them make him bad. He had a choice. Suddenly, he remembered the nail file and scrabbled frantically in the dirt until he found it. The sharp edges cut into the palm of his hand. He found the link in the chain and started filing. More than ever he was determined to escape.

He was sitting up when Stanos entered.

Stanos smiled. "We are feeling better?"

Wade nodded. "I have returned to normal."

"Good. The mistress will be pleased to hear it." Stanos bent down to unlock the shackle.

"Don't bother. I'm not going with you. Never again!"

Stanos stared intently at Wade, then went out, and locked the door. Night came. Wade sat in the darkness, waiting. Cassandra opened the door and entered. She carried a lantern.

"Stanos says you won't come."

Wade shook his head. "Never again. I would rather die than let you touch me. I would rather die than ever hurt another human being.
