Major Landmarks

The heart of Madrid is Puerta del Sol, a busy plaza that is the hub of city transportation, a popular gathering place, and venue for demonstrations and public celebrations. At its center is an equestrian statue of King Carlos III. The Royal Post Office is another landmark at this square, as is a statue of a bear climbing a madroño tree that is a symbol of Madrid. Another landmark square in the center is Plaza Mayor. In its center is a statue of King Philip III. At the Plaza de España are two of the tallest buildings in Madrid, the Torre de Madrid and Edificio España. The Royal Palace is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Other prominent structures are the Teatro Real (Royal Theater), the National Library, Palacio de Cibeles (Madrid’s City hall), and the Metropolis Building on Alcalá Street. Nearby is Puerta de Alcalá, the grand entrance to beautiful Retiro Park. The Golden Triangle of Art on Paseo del Prado features three outstanding museums, the Prado, the Reina Sofia Museum where Pablo Picasso’s Guernica about the Spanish Civil War hangs, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The city also has many other museums and cultural institutions. A landmark from recent times is the CTBA, the Cuatra Torres Business Area, the Four Towers Business Area, and modern office district that is centered on four prominent skyscrapers: Torre Espacio, Torre de Cristal, Torre Sacyr Vallehermoso, and Torre Caja Madrid.
