This wasn’t a date.

And she was not going to fall for Adrian Vassos.

They were here to pick up trash, for Pete’s sake, and sure, he was charming, and yes, they’d shared a kiss, but…well, she and Adrian were two very different people. One look at his fancy wool jacket screamed that truth.

He came from a family of real money and power.

She came from lies.

Sure, he was a great kisser, but she needed to hold onto her heart. She could only rely on herself, and no broad-shouldered, dark-haired, intense-eyed Greek man was going to change her mind.

No matter how much she wanted to kiss him again.

Maybe I will have to look into figuring out better business practices. Could he really mean that he would sacrifice his proposal? Still, she wasn’t going to fall for him, no matter how many business practices he reevaluated.

They were different people, with different kinds of lives, despite their shared criminal past.

She paused on the trail to let Adrian catch up. The sun blazed overhead in a rare show of March warmth and the sky winked a blue topaz. Ella breathed in the scent of pine and wet leaves. Other people might turn their noses up at the mud and grime of the spring season, but Ella loved the promise of new beginnings it always brought.

As she and Adrian hefted another large fallen branch out of the path, she spotted a tree with tiny pine cones on it that had fallen over just beyond the cleared path.

“Those little pine cones would look so cute tied on my pine-scented soap.” She pushed aside an aspen branch to look closer.

“I don’t think you should be leaving the path.” Adrian’s warning was ridiculous. It wasn’t like she was going deep into the woods.

“Nonsense, I’ll be right over there. I’m just going to take those pine cones and pine sprigs. They’ll be removing this tree anyway, so it’s not like I’m harming anything.”

“It’s not the tree or the woods I’m worried about, it’s you.”

She paused. He cared about her? Things had been a little awkward between them since the kiss. She wasn’t sure how to bring that up, but she supposed they needed to talk about it.

“Thanks, but I’ll be fine.”

He started to climb over the trees after her, but she held up her hand. “Stay there. I’ll be out in just a minute.” She reached down and snapped the sprigs off the dead tree. With a twist of twine, these would be the perfect ornament for her soap packaging. She generally wrapped the bars in wax paper and stamped them with her logo, but this added touch would take the product to the next level. She’d have to keep her eyes open for more.

She glanced at Adrian. A shaft of light filtered through the trees and landed on his shoulders. In his designer jacket and jeans, and hiking boots, he looked at home in the woods. Well, maybe a little overdressed for this neck of the woods. She was sure
