As the next section of rapids had a bit of a reputation, I hired a guy with a motorbike and we went off downstream in search of a fisherman who knew the river like the back of his hand. Everybody suggested I speak to Daniel Mboto, and when I finally found him he agreed to guide me down and around the most dangerous part the next day.

It was my forty-third birthday, and I was about to paddle the Gates of Hell, or La Porte de l'Enfer in French. The history books all said that the river was un-navigable from Kongolo to Kindu, with many sets of rapids after the infamous Gates of Hell. The only expedition I knew of to pass this way was the 1975 army expedition, led by John Blashford Snell using inflatable rafts and jet boats. Luckily for me, they very kindly included some information and maps in their post-trip expedition report, for which I was very grateful. If it had been the wet season I'd probably have been swept to my death, but I had purposely planned to be here now, whilst the river was lower.
