I glance at my list, feeling more confident and in control. Screw those Mayo forms. Screw that 12%. That 12% isn’t going to get me. I can use this list to make absolutely sure I’m NOT that 12%. I stare at the screen and click on a site that says PLANT ESTROGENS and find this: Plant estrogens act like natural estrogen in the body and while some studies indicate they may decrease the risk of breast cancer others indicate they may in fact increase the risk of breast cancer (especially soy). Okay, I knew about soy. But the list of plant estrogens includes most fruits and legumes and green vegetables (especially all the cruciferous vegetables—the ones I have been overloading on because I’d read they flush estrogen from the body) as well as whole grains, nuts, and seeds (especially flax). Flax? I scroll down and find BORONS. Borons? Borons, which include all green vegetables, fruit, nuts, pears, apples, raisins, and tomatoes, also have estrogen-like properties.

My heart is racing, my mind flipping, my stomach gurgling. Most of the foods I thought were healthy may be harmful; well, they could be helpful but only in certain amounts although no one knows the exact amounts.

What the hell am I supposed to eat? How do I know what to place between my lips and swallow? How did one of life’s pleasures morph into this complicated, possibly deadly pursuit? I love food and eating. I grew up in a family dedicated to meals; halfway through breakfast we were already discussing the possibilities for lunch and dinner.

My mother and I could analyze the intricacies of a perfect pear with the same zeal that we discussed Sartre and there is a chunky apple walnut cake with a warm apple cider brown sugar Calvados glaze that I always make in the fall after we go apple picking that I have literally dreamt about. But apples and walnuts are plant estrogens and borons, and butter and sugar. . . . I stare at my list of SUPER FOODS and cross-reference it with the list of plant estrogens and borons.

I end up with two things I’m pretty sure I can safely ingest: filtered water and organic green tea.
