Describing What You Do Best
Describing what your company does best — summarizing your key business activities in a few well-chosen sentences or in a clear diagram — should be easy, shouldn’t it? It’s not. (Refer to Chapter 4 for help in capturing your business in 50 words or less.) From the inside of your company looking out, you may have difficulty pushing away the everyday details and getting at the core of what actually keeps you in business from one day to the next.
Due to this difficulty, business consultants do a bang-up business. They may have fancy names for the services they offer, but the essence of what they do is simple: They help you describe what you do. Their little secret, of course, is that they don’t really possess more valuable knowledge than you. Consultants seem to have a clearer view of your business simply because they view it from the outside looking in.
You have a built-in understanding of your business and what really makes your company successful — you just need to unlock what you already know.
