Chapter Seventeen

Scoop and Sandwiches

“I saw those two guys sitting at the diner earlier. Do you know them?” Chief Pete Frampton strolled up the stairs and onto the porch.

“Their writing club rented the cabins for the weekend,” she said forcing an air of casualness although her heart still pounded a deafening drum solo in her chest.

Pete handed Louise a large brown bag. “I hope you like club sandwiches. Jen included chips and cookies. She wanted me to let you know the cookies were baked this morning.”

“Thank you. Do you mind holding the bag while I help Ben back to his bed?”

“Sure.” He reclaimed the bag and eyed the dog lying at Louise’s feet. “How is Ben?”

“His legs aren’t broken, but they’re severely bruised.” She grunted, hefting Ben to his feet by the harness. “The vet doesn’t want him walking around too much for the next few days. I didn’t expect him to follow me to the door.”

“I guess that’s a good sign if he wants to get up and move around. At least that’s what I think when my kids start wanting to play after they’ve been sick.”

“Speaking of kids, how’s Virginia, little Pete, and the girls?”

“We forgot what it was like to have a newborn.”

“At least you didn’t have twins this time.” Louise smiled, thinking of Pete’s four kids. “How old’s Ginny now … six or seven?”

“Eight last month and she sure is a lifesaver helping out with the four-year-old twins while Virginia takes care of Petey.”

“Petey?”

The chief laughed. “We named our first girl after Virginia and call her Ginny to keep the names straight. Now that we named our first boy after me, we figured I’d be Pete and he’d be Petey.”

Kind of like a boy named Sue, she wanted to say but didn’t. After ushering Ben back to his bed, she dusted her hands together and noticed Pete was still standing at the front door. “Come in. Can you stay for a few minutes?”

“I guess I’m too late.” He stepped inside and closed the front door. “Smells like you already have something cooking.” He placed the bulging brown bag onto the counter.

“Just heating up some frozen lasagna.” Kneeling at Ben’s side, she rubbed his ears and kissed the top of his head. “Thank you for protecting me,” she whispered before pushing herself to her feet.

“The sandwiches will keep in the fridge, but you might want to take out the cookies and have them for dessert.”

“That’s so kind of you to stop by and bring sandwiches.” Louise gestured for him to take a seat in the family room.

“Actually,” he glanced down at the floor then back up, “it was Roger’s idea. I mean, his department paid for the sandwiches. I would have stopped by to check on you anyway.”

“Roger rocks.” Louise passed a genuine smile to Pete. “And so do you.”

The chief looked around. Brows furrowed, he pointed with his finger at the doors which he seemed to be silently counting.

“I thought Milt would be more interested in how many exits I have in case of a fire than the police chief.
