THE DEARBORN-

MILWAUKEE SUBWAY

By 1951, when the Dearborn-Milwaukee Subway finally opened after years of delays, the tunnel was extended from Dearborn and Congress Streets to a point just west of the Chicago River. Until 1958, the LaSalle Street station was called Congress Terminal, and the subway tracks west of there were used for train storage. This map does show the planned extension into the median of the Congress Expressway, already under construction. (City of Chicago.)

On March 30, 1940, the Western Society of Engineers took a tour of one mile of completed subway tunnels on the northwest side. The owner of this brochure excitedly noted, “I was there!” The illustration on page 2 of this book appears to have been at least partly copied from the 1939 photograph shown here.
