With this, we’ve reached the end of this chapter. I’m sure you’ve learned a lot about what supporting characters are and how you can create them for your story. To test your knowledge, I’m going to leave you with a couple of quick exercises.

For the first exercise, you need to think of a story you’ve read recently and identify its supporting character. Having done that, ask yourself the following questions about this character and see what you can find:

How does this character help in the advancement of the plot?

Do they reveal any new information about the protagonist? If they do, have they done it in the best possible way, or was there room for improvement?

Does the peculiar personality or behavior of this character set the tone for the scenes they’re present in?
