Preston Manor
Preston Manor is just north of Brighton, on the road to London. How old is it? Well, that depends which part of it you’re talking about:
• 13th century. There are the remains of a two-roomed building in the basement.
• 16th century. Two old doorways survive in the basement, too.
• 18th century. Thomas Western rebuilt the house above the main floor of the medieval building, and put up small pavilions on either side of the main block.
• 20th century. In 1905 the house was enlarged, with a dining room and servants’ wing being added and a veranda gracing the north front.
So what you see today is the home of a well-to-do family in the Edwardian era.
For many visitors the fascinating parts of the house are the servants’ quarters, the butler’s pantry, the maids’ room and the kitchen – which remain just as they were.
In the garden there’s a pets’ cemetery. Here you’ll find the graves of a Town Hall cat, a Pavilion cat and poor Sooty, ‘who was cruelly poisoned’.
