At the Miles house, Mary Stapler worked quickly to prepare the evening meal. She had put a chicken in the oven to roast when she was home at noon, and when the doctor and John Ross entered the house a few minutes after five, they commented to each other on how good dinner smelled.
As Dr. Miles closed the door behind them, John looked around the parlor. A fire was crackling in the fireplace, and lamps were burning, giving the room a cozy look.
Mary came rushing in from the hall that led to the kitchen. âDinner is ready in the dining room, gentlemen. Better get your hands washed.â
The doctor looked at the chief. âLetâs go wash up. Follow me.â
Soon they were seated at the dining room table, where lighted candles gleamed on the snowy white tablecloth.
âWhat a lovely home,â John said as he gazed around the room.
The doctor smiled. âMy daughter has completely redecorated the house since my wife died. My wife kept it looking nice, but my daughter has a touch that amazes me.â
The doctor asked John Ross to pray over the food, then they began to eat. When the main course was finished, they lingered for some time, taking pleasure in warm apple pie and coffee.
When they were finally finished, John smiled at Mary. âItâs been a long time since I have enjoyed such a fine meal, maâam. You are a great cook.â
A rosy stain appeared on Maryâs cheeks. âThank you, Chief. Daddy and I are so glad you could share it with us.â
âYou must come and eat with us again sometime soon,â the doctor said.
Mary smiled happily at both men, then said, âPlease make it very soon, Chief.â
âI will, maâam, but only if you call me John from now on.â
âWell, only if you change the maâam to Mary from now on.â
âAll right, Mary, itâs a deal! I will be back through here in a week or so with the new constitution for the Council to read and hopefully accept.â
The doctor nodded. âAll right. When you come back, you must have another meal with us. Just come to the office or here to the house, depending on what time of day it is.â
Maryâs blue eyes sparkled. âYes, John. The invitation stands.â
âNeither of you has to twist my arm, I guarantee you,â John said.
