CHAPTER 13

INDIANAPOLIS, MARCH 26, 1100 EST

The next morning, I awoke to an empty house. I spotted a short message left on the kitchen table that was void of food. The message said that my wife had left for the college and would see me when I returned from my next trip. I felt that I had really let her down on our day spent in the woods. I would have to think of a way to make it up to her. She had started the coffee and probably had her share. I poured out a big mug of the jolt juice and popped some toast in the toaster. After I slathered the toast with peanut butter I took my “single” man’s breakfast into the TV room. I turned on the TV and watched the past weekend’s carnage cover the screen interrupted by happy jingles selling car insurance and dish soap. I turned the television off after ten minutes. That was more than enough noise from the rectangular view into the world. I finished my toast and coffee and sat there and decided that this was good moment for prayer.

I felt uplifted after taking the violence I saw on TV and the gun discovery to the Lord. A couple of minutes had passed by and the silence in the room was broken by the ring tone. I learned I would be on the W186 at 1100 EST with Sudsy as my conductor.

I guessed that Sudsy bumped back on our board. I thought that maybe I could learn more about the investigation from Sudsy as I got up to get my shower.

After I had showered and packed my grip for the trip, I noticed that I had some time for a few calls. I was thinking of calling the Danville Police Department to learn of the cause of death of Richard Hines but realized that I really didn’t have connections there. Instead, I decided to call John Shaw. I dialed his number but he didn’t answer so I just left a brief message for him to give me a return call at his leisure.

I decided to give Detective Holman a call and see if he knew anything more this morning following our encounter in the woods yesterday. He answered on the fifth ring. I asked him about the gun found in the woods. He said it was a Smith and Wesson .357 magnum, model 686, six-shot gun that could deliver a great impact—strong enough to push a man from a bridge. It had only a few partial prints, none of which were of any help and the serial number that was under the cylinder under the barrel of the gun had been filed off.

The gun didn’t tell the story I wanted to know so I asked if the Danville Police Department had word on the cause of death of Richard Hines. He said that the coroner’s report just came in. Richard had multiple contusions and lacerations, kidney damage, a broken spine and the occipital bone was fractured.
