Beatrice was extremely nervous Sunday morning unsure of what she would find at the new church. Adam had explained that he usually walked to the church an hour before services started so he could start the fire in the stove when it was cold, like now, and so he could make certain the church was in fit shape for service.
Beatrice went with him and swept the church while he built the fire. She walked through the pews and made certain that every hymnal was in place. She'd never visited a different church in her life. She had attended every week, but there'd never been a need to go anywhere but her own church near the seminary.
She was surprised at how tiny the church was. She hadn't really looked around when they'd arrived Friday because she was so nervous about marrying. It certainly wasn't a five hundred member church like her church had been back in Dallas. It seemed more like a schoolhouse to her than a church. When she remarked on that to Adam he smiled. "It was a combination schoolhouse and church until two years ago when they opened a bigger school down the road. That's why it looks so much like a school."
"I like the feel of it," she told him. "It's small and welcoming."
"I hope you still feel that way in two hours." He worried that the way she would be treated by some of the older women would make her never want to come back to the church.
When people started filing into the church, Beatrice went to stand beside Adam so he could introduce her. He'd asked her to sit in the front pew, so she sat off to one side in the front. She wasn't at all surprised to see that Mrs. Weekly and her family filled the pew on the other side of the church from her. The family came in at the last minute, but their seats remained empty as if no one dared to sit there. Beatrice saw Mrs. Weekly whisper something to a young lady beside her, presumably her daughter.
Throughout the songs and the sermon, Beatrice could see the girl glaring at her, dabbing her eyes on occasion for effect. She ignored it all, keeping her gaze on her husband. She hoped the look she gave him was serious as she concentrated on his words.
The sermon was about Christian charity which didn't shock her at all. If the person leading the other women in the congregation was Mrs. Weekly, then they all needed a good lesson on Christian charity, as soon as they could get it. Beatrice enjoyed the scriptures Adam chose and was thrilled her husband was such a good speaker. They'd had students from the seminary preach at her church in Dallas before, and they were rarely good. Of course they were all learning.
Adam started with Acts 20:35, and she could hear the groan Mrs. Weekly let out from across the aisle. She wanted so badly to snatch the other woman baldheaded, but she didn't even glance her way.
