“WHAT CRAWLED UP YOUR ASS and died?” asked Jesse. “You’ve been in a pissy mood all day.”

Nate shot the kid a withering look and wondered how bad it would be to send him out to clean up trash in the parking lot and then lock the door.

Bad, considering he was supposed to be a good influence. Left to his own devices, the kid was a magnet for trouble. He’d probably be on the street for all of ten minutes before he did something to get picked up by the cops again. Then he’d have to call Becca to get the kid out. Considering she was the reason for his mood—the little asshole wasn’t wrong about everything—that would undoubtedly make things worse.

“You’re seriously worried about my feelings?” Nate didn’t have the time or energy to deal with this shit.

He still couldn’t believe how badly he’d fucked things up with Becca. Seeing her poker night made things worse. It gave him a chance to realize where she was concerned, reality was better than his imagination, and he’d been working that overtime. She was beautiful. Polished and elegant. She was also whip-smart and interesting. He’d had her alone, practically purring under his hands. She asked him to kiss her. And he’d messed everything up.

“I’ve never seen anything get under your skin.” Andrews watched him like he was trying to work his way through something.

Nate prayed he stayed far away from the truth. He didn’t need the whole building knowing his bosses’ sister had him twisted up in knots.

“It’s got to be a woman.”

Damn. Nate sucked in a breath and held it before counting out the exhale.

“Aw shit, man,” said Jesse, doing everything but slapping his knee. “Bitches be the worst.”

“What did you say?” Andrews was on his feet and in the kid’s face before Nate had a chance to move.

“I’m sorry?” The kid sounded confused, but he at least had the good sense to lead with an apology and to look scared.

“Damn straight,” said Andrews. “We are not going to put up with that kind of misogynistic bullshit here or anywhere else. Do you understand me?”

There was such barely restrained anger in Andrews’s voice, Nate ran through everything he’d said or thought recently just to make sure he was righteous.

“Yes.” The kid looked deflated. The transformation was amazing. He’d gone from cocky young asshole who challenged everything, to a more or less civilized human. He still messed up, but he cared what the guys—especially Andrews—thought. He had a little bit of a hero worship thing going with the tank-sized ex-Ranger.

“Yes, what?” asked Nate, figuring he ought to at least pitch in and do his part.

“Yes, sir.”

They were quiet for a moment, and Nate thought they might have moved past him. He should be so lucky.

“But is that what it was?” The kid sounded nervous, but apparently his curiosity was stronger.

“Is what what it was?” Maybe he could confuse them with questions. It was working on him.

“Is it a woman who has you so
