In 1933, English actor Albert de Winton, who had appeared in Hollywood B-movies like King of the Wild, launched his own search for Fawcett.
Vowing to find the British explorer dead or alive, Winton spent months in the jungle of Mato Grosso.
He emerged in 1934 and was photographed in tattered clothes, emaciated, before disappearing again into the Xingu region.
That September, an Indian runner brought a note out from the forest that said Winton had been captured by a tribe, and begged for help.
Years later, Brazilian officials learned that members of the Kamayura tribe had killed Winton in order to steal his rifle.
