"He wasn't a bad guy. He only did that stuff to feed the baby."

"I didn't come here to impeach his character," I said.

Though I realized as it came out of my mouth that the words would go right over her head. "I mean I'm sure he was a nice guy. I just have a couple questions."

She moved the baby to her other hip and mentally braced herself. "All right, fine. Ask your questions."

"Who did Leroy steal cars for?"

She shrugged. "No one in particular. He was, like, independent."

"Okay. Do you know who sent him to steal my car? It was a Plymouth Dust--"

"I know what kind of car it was. I read the newspaper," she said, without answering my question.

She stared at me until I asked again. "Why would I know something like that? You think Leroy sat around the apartment saying, ‘Honey I'm gonna go steal another car. This one's a Plymouth?'"

Again, she hadn't answered my question. I had the feeling she knew exactly who sent him to steal my car.

"How about we try a different question. Where are you moving to?"

"Why? You wanna get me a housewarming present?"

"Maybe."

"I'm moving to Lincoln Park," she said boldly. "Well, maybe it's more like Logan Square. But it's better than this shithole."

A lot better. It was a big step up. I was about to ask how she'd managed that when the answer walked through the door. Larry Renaldo, car bomber extraordinaire. A number of things fell into place very quickly. I looked at young, pretty Mrs. Butterfield and said, "I guess the grieving period wasn't particularly long."
