was a doorman guarding the lobby. The likelihood that he'd let me breeze right by was slim. I walked around the block until I found the alley. Halfway down the alley, I located the entrance to the building's garage. It was gated.

I found a spot next to a trash bin and lit a cigarette. I felt incredibly conspicuous, but there wasn't much I could do about that. After about ten minutes, I heard the gate open and turned to see a little BMW 2002 scoot out of the building. I rushed around the corner. The metal gate was closing. It had about three feet to go. I hurried down the incline, lying down and rolling the last few feet under the gate.

Inside the garage, I quickly made my way across to the service elevator. The walls of the elevator were hung in moving pads; I pressed thirty-five and was immediately pulled upward. After a minute or so, the doors opened and I was on the thirty-fifth floor. I went down two hallways and found the apartment number, so I knocked.

Moments later, the door was opened by a short, anemic-looking man with thinning hair. He wore a pair of boxers, heavy socks, and a stained T-shirt. He looked at me suspiciously and said, "Yes?"

"I'm a private eye looking into Dex Sum--"

The little man slammed the door shut. Unfortunately, I'd decided to slip my foot in, the way people do in the movies.

It kept the door open, but the pain made me yelp in an embarrassing way. I promised myself I'd never to do that again.

"Move your foot," he spat.
