Chapter 10

KIT was almost glad of the interruption, since he had no idea as to what he should do or say in such a situation. He had just kissed His Royal Highness, and it was almost unreal, when he thought of it. Even though the kiss had been only a few seconds ago. He couldn’t even believe that he had done that… and there was an orange tabby eating the leftover eggs from their plates on the kitchen table. Really, where did Sasha manage to find these cats? Half of them appeared to be about the same size as small dogs. Kit moved carefully so he would not startle the cat—he didn’t know what sort of violence cats were capable of when disturbed, and looked out the kitchen door, carefully keeping below eye level. Sasha was, again, seated on his usual chair, facing Cory’s sister number two who was seated, as usual, on the sofa. This time, though, Sasha was facing the kitchen door, and Kit stepped forward boldly to listen in on the conversation.

“… Candela has always been the headstrong one in the family,” the woman was saying, so Kit was sure he hadn’t missed out on much.

“I’m not about to give everything over to you just because you want me to,” Sasha replied with a shrug, indicating that it was the least of his problems. “As you can see, I’m not brain damaged despite all those rumors.”

“Which reminds me,” said Lux as she reached into her handbag. “I brought your mail.… You know, we keep receiving these phone calls and letters for you, only it’s like you’ve dropped off the face of the earth. No forwarding address, phone number unlisted….”

Pushed off the earth was more like it, Kit thought. Sasha remained impassively silent. Lux pointedly pulled out some envelopes from her handbag and reached forward pretending to hand them over to Sasha. She stopped just out of reach so that Sasha would have to lean forward to grab them, and Kit knew Sasha was not about to do that. For a moment there was a silent battle of wills before Lux decided to retreat to the sofa, keeping the collection of letters on the armrest. Being close to her, Kit could see some of the letters had been opened, but at least she had been thoughtful enough to bring them over.

“They’re mostly from a clinic,” she said, acting as though there had not been an impasse several seconds ago. “I thought you might want them….
