We know about Doraâs public life in Salt Lake and Ogden because she was involved in public matters. However, we know very little about her personal and private affairs. She kept her personal life private. She was very enigmatic about her history. What weâve gleaned are only fragments here and there. She was born in either Illinois or Kentucky around 1865. Her name might have been Adora Long. In the late 1870s, she probably worked as a bawd in Colorado. In the early 1890s, she moved to thriving Ogden, Utah, where she wed Thomas Topham. She had a child in 1896 in Nebraska. Her marriage to Thomas likely soured around 1899; the census then indicates that she lived alone. (That same year, Thomas was accused of murdering a man named Charles Wessler, tried, and acquitted.) In 1902, they divorced and she received alimony. After her legal problems in Salt Lake, she wanted to focus on raising her daughter (she might have had another daughter by now) and to tend to her other business interests. Soured on Utah, she liquidated her businesses and moved to California. She continued raising her family and setting up other businesses. In 1925, she was helping one of her employees tow a stalled car with her own vehicle. An accident occurred, and she was crushed between the two vehicles. Dora B. Topham, Madame Belle London, died five days later.
