The Allen Gymnasium and Turkish Baths was located at 42 to 56 Saint Botolph Street. Mary E. Allen, the proprietor, opened a gymnasium proper for women and children that not only had a normal department, but a bath department and a swimming school.

The Everett School faced both Northampton and Camden Streets and was dedicated on September 17, 1860—the 230th anniversary of the settlement of Boston. Named for Edward Everett (1794–1865), it was designed by Gridley J. Fox Bryant and was a girls’ school. It was destroyed by fire in 1965. (Courtesy of David Rooney.)
