We camped on a friendâs property. K was there with her girlfriend, and the girlfriend had very specific rules about where exes were allowed to be in relation to one another. She conducted a campaign of sorts, taco Tuesday notwithstanding, that made us feel less like we were camping and more like we were homeless. When it rained, we spent the day at the public library, looking through DVDs. I was writing my masterâs thesis on a heavy laptop. Tried to lay the printed pages on a floor when I could find a dry one. We found a man who lived in a cabin shaped like an egg in the midst of all that purple fireweed. Biked long miles, drank coffee, drank whiskey with a woman with a Jo attached to her name. People took pity and began to give us house-sitting gigs. We showered across the parking lot from a bar. Our dogâs ears went straight up in the middle of the night in the tent while she growled at a register below earthquake, and weâd squirm, anticipating a bear. We didnât mind the rain so much when we could get french fries or breakfast sausage. I always intended to give the host of our campground a red vase as a thank-you, but we never sent it, the entire summer a botched rendition of the original.
Of her Public Sex series, Lorna Simpson tells Anna Novakov: âYou are in a national park. You are with one person but are remembering when you were there with someone else. There is a layering that you donât want to reveal. You have nostalgia connected to someone else. Private memories emerge while you are trying to pretend that it is something new.â
The photographs that comprised the Public Sex series were printed on felt, arranged in a grid. No figures were present. My favorite one is of a fire escape. There is also a rock. Recently, while looking at it, I realized that, indeed, I had a rock like this with K.
