take a stance—carefully

CHAPTER SIX: Since we’re discussing body language, it’s about time we get around to addressing the actual body. The way we carry and position ourselves have a great bearing on how others perceive us. We can know everything about controlling our eye contact and cutting down on the more aggressive (or passive) hand gestures, but if we don’t know how to use the body to our advantage, we’re missing out on a major aspect of nonverbal communication.

STANDING TALL

The way we use our bodies sends a clear message to others in the room. We have to be concerned with posture, as well as open and defensive stances. Then there’s the matter of personal space—are we intruding on someone else’s turf? How will he or she react to this? Holding our bodies correctly can make us look like winners—or losers. We’d best get down to business so that we come out on the right side of this equation.
