Chapter Twenty-Nine
A T POLICE HEADQUARTERS in downtown Kansas City, Detective Maria Lopez, aka Maid Maria Gomez, was sitting next to Detective George Sanders as she reported to their Commander, Captain Bill Lomack, a former Marine and a cops cop.
Lopez was a third generation Latino citizen of the USA. She had the raven hair and dark eyes of her Mexican heritage. Ten years on the KCPD had not diminished the beauty of her face or form.
“I was able to get the old man on tape setting up the hit on Grant in Springfield, and then again in Texas. Unfortunately we were unable to get a trace on the phone in Springfield. We also got him talking about his brother killing their rival gangster in Houston.”
“You’ve done real good, Maria,” Lomack said. “It was tough getting the court to OK those wire taps, but maybe, just maybe, we can finally nail the old man.”
“That new equipment helped. Being able to turn the tap on and off kept his security company from finding it.”
Sanders said, “I believe we have enough for Texas to indict him as a co-conspirator in the murders of Malcomb Lancaster’s wife and son, and for Greene County to connect him directly to the murder of Malcomb Lancaster, aka Joel Cates.”
“And another big plus for us,” the Captain said, “and probably the most important result of your work at the Deconetti house is the discovery of our own leak. I’ve moved him downstairs to property for now. We don’t want to charge him until the DA indicts Deconetti. We mustn’t do anything to tip off the old man we’re on to him. Don’t want him to rabbit. And the DA refuses to rush the case. He want’s every i dotted and every t crossed...no slip ups, no wiggle room for his slick lawyers.”
“What we don’t have is a lead on the Springfield connection,” Sanders said. “Someone down there is working for Deconetti, and there’s a mole in the SPD, if not something far worse.”
“We’ll fax everything we have to SPD,” the Captain said. “Then it’s up to them to find their own bad apples.”
“Captain, with your permission,” Sanders said, “I’m going to call my friend, Gideon Grant, and bring him up to speed. He’s the PI in Springfield I told you about. He works real close with an SPD homicide Major...Jenkins, if my memory serves me well. They were partners when Grant was with the department.”
“If you think it’ll help, by all means, call him.”
