“We got the subpoena,” Jimmy said.

I glanced at Bishop. He smiled. “A little schmoozing goes a long way.”

“I don’t care what either of you did,” Jimmy said. “We just need something or nothing that is on those videos, do you understand?”

“We’ll do our best,” I said.

Bishop and I headed out wondering how we could magically not make Scott Baker appear on video. The hotel manager wasn’t thrilled about the subpoena, but he didn’t have a choice, other than giving us access to the videos then or bringing them into the department himself. He chose to show us instead.

We went through each video for each day Baker was registered at the hotel, and unfortunately, the videos verified his statement. He wasn’t our guy, and we were back to nothing. We didn’t talk on the way back to the department. When we got there, things were a hundred percent worse than when we’d left.

The media reported the serial killer link on the internet, in the print papers, and on the news, and it quickly went viral. The town wasn’t the only place up in arms, the national media was too, which sent Jimmy flying into stroke territory again. He was angry, and he took it out on us because he couldn’t take it out on the mayor.

“It’s on CNN and Fox News. Almost the same reporting too, and those two networks have polar-opposite reporting, but apparently not when it comes to a serial killer in my town,” he said. He paced a loop around the investigation table. “We need to find that killer before he hits again. Do you hear me?”

“Yes, sir,” Bishop said. His eyes shifted to mine.

Jimmy was close to losing it. A young baby, a big-mouthed, controlling mayor on his butt, and a double murder were enough to make anyone lose it, but he needed to keep it together. All eyes were on us and this case, and if we didn’t catch the killer soon, we’d all be out of a job.

So, I took an alternative route. “Put me on the news. I’ll draw out the killer. Force him to communicate with me again.”

Jimmy stopped dead in his tracks. “What?” He shook his head. “No way. You’re the last person I’d put on TV.”

Gee, thanks. “The guy left me a note. He’s courting me. Let me talk to him directly. Trust me, it’ll distract him. If we can do that, we’ll have a better chance of catching him.”

“Or put him on high alert,” Jimmy said.

I couldn’t argue that.

Bishop nodded. “She’s right. Our guy feels a connection to her. Let her talk to him directly.”

Jimmy rubbed the top of his head and sighed. “The mayor will have my ass for this.”

“Don’t tell him,” I said.

“If you’re on the news, he’ll find out.”

“You won’t be there with me. Plausible deniability,” I said.

“Doesn’t matter. Shit rolls down.”

“I promise you we’ll get a reaction from the killer. I can make that happen, and then you can take all the credit with the mayor.”

“You know I don’t care about credit, Rachel.
