Chapter Fifteen

Lydia had expected another horrible Gary headline and she wasn’t disappointed.

“Sniper Kills At Will!” the new edition proclaimed in bold letters. The people were already on edge about their safety, and Gary’s inflammatory headlines did nothing to try to calm their fears.

Lydia knew that if she wanted to keep her job, she would have to get used to her editor’s ways, but the forthright journalist in her wanted to deal with the facts only, not sensationalism and hype. She felt sorry for Steve and the rest of the police department. They were doing everything in their power to catch this murderer, but he was always one step ahead of them.

The previous afternoon the police had released a composite of the “person of interest,” and Gary had placed only a small copy of the picture below the headline.

Lydia sat at her kitchen table, staring down at the picture. Nothing about the man looked familiar. The composite could have been any middle-aged, clean-shaven white man, and she couldn’t help wondering just how accurate it was. Though eyewitnesses could sometimes be helpful, often they were inaccurate and could be misleading. She hoped that wasn’t the case here. The police needed all the help they could get to catch this cold-blooded killer.

After finishing her breakfast, Lydia headed to the office. She was certain that work would be waiting for her; and if she didn’t do it, it wouldn’t get done.

Lydia was hard at work at her desk before nine. It was a little past eleven when the office clerk came by and dropped her mail in her in-box. She didn’t pay much attention. Gary wasn’t in that morning, and she was getting caught up on a lot of paperwork. When she finally turned her attention to the few letters, she didn’t see anything that looked important. As she opened them, she found one to be a thank-you note from a gentleman she’d done an article on a few weeks before. Another letter from a subscriber complained about the articles on the sniper. She was tempted to leave it on Gary’s desk, but knew there was no point.

And then she opened the last piece of mail to find a computer-generated letter:

Lydia Chandler—

As you are reading this, you already know that I have killed again. I claimed my fourth victim, and no one is any closer to finding me.

Do I need to wish you luck?

—A Friend

Lydia stared down at the piece of paper in shock. She looked up, then glanced around the office, trying to figure out what to do. Should she wait for Gary and let the paper get credit for being the first one to be contacted in writing by the sniper? Or should she go straight to the police with it? She knew Steve had gotten an anonymous phone call, but this was different. There might be an actual physical clue here. It didn’t take her long to make her decision.

Carefully carrying the note with her, she appeared nonchalant as she made her way to the copier.
