On the same day, a tall man who had been hiding since Wednesday night at the Hôtel of Artois also slipped out of the city with several accomplices. “Having changed their clothes and disguised themselves,” they traveled separately from Paris “by different routes.” They were bound for a château in Artois that belonged to Burgundy, where safety and payment in gold awaited them.35

John and his men raced northward through Picardy, not even stopping to change horses, according to reports, and halting only once while still in French territory.36

This was at Pont-Sainte-Maxence, on the river Oise, about forty miles north of Paris. After crossing the wooden bridge there, they stopped, dismounted, and attacked the bridge timbers with axes, breaking them down in order to delay any pursuers.37 Back in the saddle, they rode on, galloping north past the towns of Roye and Nesle.

John’s pursuers eventually reached the shattered bridge, and it stopped them in their tracks. Clignet de Breban reluctantly called off the chase and turned back.38 There had been little chance of catching John anyway, since he and his men had gotten a good head start, and a small party could travel much faster than a large one.39 But Clignet’s foiled attempt to avenge Louis’s death heralded the great conflict and division in France that was to come.
