A roughly equal number of Mexican Americans, they also show, believe the same about black Americans.

Charles Y. Glock was the founding director of the Survey Research Center and the principal investigator of the prejudice research program.
In all of our previous studies using these items, we had noticed that positively worded items are only poorly intercorrelated with negative ones; that is, that even people who are strongly prejudiced against Jews are prepared to acknowledge that they can have some positive qualities. This study was no exception. The (average) correlation of the one positive item with the other four negative ones is .08.
For a description of this survey, see Sniderman and Carmines 1997. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and was carried out in 1991 on a nationwide random-digit telephone sample by the University of California, Berkeley, Survey Research Center. The target population for the study was all English-speaking adults, 18 years of age or older, residing in households with telephones, within the 48 contiguous states. There were 2,223 interviews completed, with a 65.3 percent response rate.
See the description of the national sample in the previous note.
We obtained the data presented here from the Anti-Defamation League.
We only have the summated data to work with anyway.
For a systematic discussion of alternative theoretical and operational definitions of prejudice, see chapter 2 of Sniderman et al. 2000.
The mean inter-item correlation is .42.
For the Chicago sample, alpha = .75; for the national white sample, alpha = .77; for the portion of the national sample that is black, alpha = .69.

For an older, but still excellent, review, see Quinley and Glock 1977.
The classic locus of this argument is Selznick and Steinberg 1969.

This is particularly true of religiosity. We only have information as to whether respondents are Protestant or not, and not the particular Protestant (and fundamentalist) beliefs they do or do not hold.
The values reported are for unstandardized regression coefficients with all variables scored from 0 to 1.
For a detailed account of the history and validation of the measure of Psychological Tolerance, see Sniderman et al. 2000, chap. 3.
See Herring, Jankowsi, and Brown 1999. We have learned a great deal from their analysis, even if we disagree with some of the details of their conclusions.
Selznick and Steinberg 1969.
We have inspected the result for a variety of response biases. We have found none, but it is worth noting explicitly that the difference between the two experimental conditions is probably not the result of a selection
