37. The Family/The Clan (Jia Ren): Wind arises from Fire and Fire is intensified by Wind. Fire in the inner trigram represents Fire from within, Fire returning home. Powerful action begins inside and provides mutual generation; the inner and outer generating each other represents the family. When light is suppressed, when there is injury, as in the previous hexagram, it is necessary to go inside. This is a return to the family; a return to what one knows.

38. Opposition/Separation (Kui): Fire above and the Lake below. Fire moves upward and Lake downward. This represents opposition, things separating, going different ways. When the family is exhausted or comes to an end there is separation and discord.
