In 2017 ProPublica, an independent, nonprofit newsroom, filed public-records requests with every state’s governor and twenty-two federal agencies, asking them for lists of everyone who had been blocked on their official Facebook and Twitter accounts. The responses received so far show that governors and agencies across the country have blocked at least 1,298 accounts.17 This is unacceptable in a country that prides itself on the First Amendment. The right to petition the government is sacred.
