There had been times at sea when Septimus had felt as though heâd never see land againâwhen theyâd been blown off course or storm currents had pushed them back from the shore, in spite of his best navigational efforts. The deep-seated worry he had felt during those timesâanxiety that had curled through his gut and squeezed his lungs so that every breath felt as though it could be his lastâwas of the same sort that heâd felt since being forced out of the Navy. But as he awoke from a deep slumber the next morning to a heavy weight on his chest, he realized that the metaphorical weight heâd been carrying since the Majesty had been decommissioned was gone. Heâd spotted land at last, the storm was over as suddenly as it had started, and he could see home on the horizon.
The actual weight covering him was much heavier than a mere blanket, and much warmer as well. That sleep-confused thought was replaced by the realization that it wasnât a blanket at all, it was a body. Adamâs body. Adam was splayed and naked above him, apparently sound asleep, with his head resting on Septimusâs shoulder and his morning wood wedged tightly against Septimusâs own.
Everything rushed back to Septimus from thereâthe ridiculous game Red and Barrett had invented the day before, the intense conversation he and Adam had had in which heâd bared his soul, and the descent into absolute carnal bliss that the two of them had engaged in afterward. Several times. Septimus had behaved as, well, as a boy Adamâs age again in his eagerness to tangle up with Adam in every way they could imagine. Not that Adam was a boy. Far from it. Septimus felt foolish for assuming that Adamâs youthful appearance made him somehow green and innocent. The truth was far from that, although Adam had laughingly insisted that he wasnât as experienced as all that⦠right before heâd swallowed Septimus with all the enthusiasm and talent of an Italian.
The thought brought a smile to Septimusâs face. He let out a contented sigh and shifted to stretch his back as much as he could without waking Adam, throwing one arm behind his head as he did. He lazily stroked Adamâs back with his other hand, wondering what divine madness had happened to bring him to where he was.
On the surface, he was in Adamâs bed with the indomitable man draped over him because there was barely room for one of them to lie comfortably in the damnably small thing, let alone for the two of them to lie side by side. Septimus had suggested at one point that they relocate to his guest room and the much larger bed there, but their efforts to get up and dress so that they could creep through the halls long after dark somehow ended with them undressing again so that Septimus could fold Adam over the end of the bed and pound him into a moaning, sighing puddle of satisfaction.
