He nodded. “Makes you feel closer to God.”
“I guess that’s it,” she agreed, not bothering to move out of his embrace. “I’ve never felt so close to God. Being here in Fairweather, with so many good people to lend support, has truly helped me to put my faith back in the proper perspective.”
“And what about me?” he asked, his voice betraying him.
“What about you?” She looked up, her eyes wide with wonderment and…maybe just a little doubt.
“Have I helped you to put things into perspective?”
She lifted a hand to his face, her touch warm, her eyes as deep and rich as a forest. “No,” she said bluntly. “You’ve put my whole system into this…this out-of-control tailspin. I don’t know about you, Rev.”
“I know about you, though,” he said, more than pleased that she seemed to be having some of the same symptoms as him. Then before she could bolt out of his arms, he leaned down to kiss her. His hand still held her chin; her hand still rested on his jawline. The chili still bubbled away on the stove, and outside, the winter wind picked up to rattle branches against the many windows.
Sara’s sigh filled the tiny kitchen, making Ben smile into her lips, her warm, welcoming lips. He lifted his head then. “Was that a protest or a promise?”
She looked up at him, her face flushed, her hair mushed, and gave him a crooked little smile. “Depends. Will your chili have the same effect as your kisses?”
“Oh, you mean that slight burning sensation all the way to the tips of your toes?”
“Did I say that?”
“You didn’t feel that kiss all the way to your toes?” He feigned confusion. “It’s always worked before.”
She pulled away then, playfully slapping him on the shoulder. “Either way, I think I’m in for some major heartburn.”
Ben let her go to catch his own breath. Well, he’d certainly felt that kiss. No amount of chili, spicy or otherwise, could ever compare to the slow burn he felt right now, just looking at her.
Heartburn. Was that what she thought he’d cause her?
She might be right. And he was sure his own heart would suffer in the process.
But he’d sure like to take that risk.
Sara was standing at the windows, apparently trying to distance herself from him as much as she could. She turned then, her eyes lighting up. “Ben, it’s snowing.”
He came to stand by her. “So it is.” Then he looked over at her, saw the delight in her eyes, saw that something else he couldn’t put a name to just yet. “First snow. First kiss—if we don’t count that little peck I gave you in the church parking lot.”
