HORACE COLEMAN RETURNED to the tenement early that afternoon to see for himself what repairs the place needed. Greta was not out front, but Mr. Wagner was already in the office giving it a good cleaning. Coleman was pleased. They talked for a while, and then the two of them walked through the entire building, floor by floor. Twice, they spotted the cats scurrying this way and that down a hallway.
âTheyâve delivered three of their catches at Mrs. Gretaâs door this morning,â said Mr. Wagner. âI managed to get them scooped up and thrown away before she came out.â
âHave you seen her this morning?â
âNot yet but Iâve been busy and might not have seen her go out or come in.â
âWhich apartment is hers?â Coleman asked.
Wagner led the way past four of the residents lined up to use the water closet and then on down the first floor hallway and left him at Gretaâs door. By the time Mr. Wagner returned to the lobby, the plumber was there, so he took him upstairs.
Greta was happy to see Horace Coleman and opened the door wide to let her new friend enter. If he seemed dismayed by the number of things she had in her tiny place, he didnât mention it, not that she would care if he objected. She quickly closed the door and then said, âI figured it out, and if you mean to pay back the money they overpaid, it would come to one dollar for each apartment. A free month would be far more than a dollar each.â
âYet, it would help with food, shoes for the children and coal for winter, would it not?â
Greta raised an eyebrow. âWell then, two dollars for each apartment. Any more than that and they would think you were up to something.â
Coleman chuckled and put his hat back on. âI am up to something, but it has nothing to do with them.â He winked, left, and closed the door behind him.
Greta thoughtfully shifted her eyes to one side, and then slowly shifted them to the other side. At length, she clapped her hands together. âBet I know what heâs up to.â
