WORK CLIMATE

All of the above becomes much, much easier if the work climate facilitates and maximizes the benefits to employees of disclosing early on their mental health problems in the workplace. Legislation in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States specifies that disclosure is a first step for an employee to seek formal accommodation for a mental health problem. There is evidence that an employee is more likely to explain a mental health issue to you, the manager, than to coworkers or HR managers. This disclosure in itself has been shown to reduce an employee’s anxiety. Many employees, however, perceive the costs of disclosure to be much greater than the benefits. For example, they often see disclosure as framing their identity and hence how they will be seen by others. This will result in negative emotions by others toward them and discriminating behaviors against them by their colleagues. In short, they believe they will be devalued. This, in turn, can reduce self-esteem and induce feelings of demoralization and shame. As a result, an employee is likely to feel embarrassed and withdraw from work.5
