Chapter Eleven

That morning, a terrible storm blowing a very hard gale rained down with thunder and lightning that shook the rafters of their inn. But they were oblivious to the tempest outside.

In their cozy room, Daisy viewed their lovemaking as prelude to hours of magic in her new husband’s embrace. As they dressed to go down to the public room for breakfast, she needed to do nothing more than glance at him to know she was eager to taste again the thrill of his tenderness. He read her overture as invitation to return to their bed, and they tarried in their adventures for so long that they nearly missed the breakfast service.

Upstairs later, Garrick settled at one of the two tables, took out his spectacles, and began to doodle on paper he had purchased from the innkeeper. When she asked what he did, he told her that he often thought best with quill in hand, drawing nothing but circles and triangles, boxes and lines. “I discover new ideas. Things I’d never thought of before. I’ve not had a chance to do it these past few weeks. One thing and another has happened so quickly. I need to let my mind wander to figure out the problems I face.”

“I understand that. I began a project when I encountered difficulties teaching my students. It’s taken the form of a children’s book. Perhaps one day I might sell it, if a publisher thinks it might have merit.”

“Did you bring it with you?”

“I did.”

“May I see it?”

“Of course. It’s rough. But it represents my attempt to think of a project in a new way.” No one else had ever asked about it, and she doubted she would have readily handed it to just anyone. But she had no compunctions about showing Garrick.

Daisy removed a sheaf of papers from a portfolio in her valise and set them out upon the other table in their room. “Like you with your random drawing, I haven’t done any work on this in a while. Since I left for London, in fact. It’s an instruction book I wrote for children to learn French.”

He leaned over her at the table and skimmed her words. “Remarkable. Have you been at this long?”

She leaned back against his chest, his tender assurance all she’d never had. “I began two years ago, but changed last summer the direction of what I’m doing. At first, it was to be more of a lexicon. Now it is a story in English and French. A new way, I hope, for children to be entertained while they learn a new language.”

He read a few more lines. “A story about a fox and a rabbit?”

“Oui, monsieur! Renard et Lapine live together on the edge of a forest bordering two estates.”

“But they are antagonists, aren’t they? One the hunter of the other?”

“In real life, it would be so. But Monsieur Renard and Mademoiselle Lapine have a challenge to overcome. You see, the people who live on the two estates are always fighting each other.
