Chapter Eight

Jane was frustrated and felt more alone than she ever had in her entire life. Here she was in a beautiful house without anyone to speak to besides her mother, and she was not of a particular interest to speak to the other woman. Her mother had changed the song to her tune and was enjoying the lavish lifestyle at the estate in so much that Jane now wondered if she was really dying. She despised spending time with her mother who always talked badly about the Earl, dubbing him the Beastly Earl.

Quite frankly Jane was at the end of her tether and tried to be as far away from her mother as possible. Otherwise, she would have to bite her tongue not to snap at her mother to stop referring to the Earl as a beast. For the past two days, she had supper with him, but it was the only time of the day she saw him. He never took breakfast with her, and whenever she asked after him she was told he was busy in his study. She wondered how she was expected to learn more about him if he was never around. In fact, she did not believe he wished to marry her any longer, especially after what she had said about Fenn’s parentage.

With a sigh, she descended the stairs on her third morning since arriving at Christophe. Yesterday, she had written a letter to Evelyn to let her sister know what was happening with her. She was also hoping that the Duke would know more about the Earl so she could be better equipped to reach the man. She did not believe he was at all bad, but he was shunning her without giving her a chance.

To make matters worse, she had not seen Fenn since he had walked out during dinner. She felt she owed him an apology as she had not meant to cause any issue between him and the Earl.

“Are you breaking your fast now m’lady?” a maid asked as she descended the stairs.

“Has Lord Christophe broken his fast as yet?” she queried, meaning to wait on him if that was what it took to speak to him.

“We are bringing his breakfast to him in his office, right now m’lady.”

An idea began to form in Jane’s mind. She smiled at the maid. “Perfect. Yes, I would very much like to break my fast now. Would you mind bringing it in with the Earl’s? I think I shall eat with him this morn.”

“Are you certain m’lady?”

“Yes, I am quite sure.”

As the maid headed for the kitchen to relay her instructions, Jane walked to the office with a purpose in her stride. If the Earl would not come to her, then she decided it was only fitting for her to go to him. At the office door, she paused and took a deep breath before she rapped on the solid oak.

“Come in.”

She entered the office to find the Earl sitting at his desk, bent over ledgers.
