Though dinner began with Julia feeling ill at ease, the sight of the simple, tasty food relaxed her. As friendly conversation swirled, she stole glance after glance at Rosalind’s father. He’s quite a nice-looking mature gentleman. If only he spoke Spanish. She looked again, enjoying the sight of his neatly coiffed graying hair and his friendly, refined face.

Brilliant green eyes exactly the same shade as Rosalind’s met hers. Color flooded her face as she realized she had been caught staring, but she couldn’t look away. He held her with his gaze as a little shiver went through her. He could learn Spanish, she realized. I wonder how long he will stay…until after the wedding surely. All the Christmas dresses have been delivered, so perhaps I can convince Don Vidal to let me do my sewing here, rather than return to Cádiz.

Silly thought, as though this distinguished guest would even care whether I’m there or not. Geoffrey Carlisle was a wealthy businessman, like Vidal, and surely a lowly seamstress would be far beneath his notice.

His expression told her otherwise. There was admiration there, the kind a man gives to a woman he desires. No one had ever looked at Julia that way before, and she found she liked his frank appraisal more than she had expected. It felt slightly improper, as though she should not allow it, but really, he was only looking. How could there be any harm in a look?
