UNDERSTAND THE BRAIN-BODY CANCER CONNECTION

IT WAS CLOSE TO MIDNIGHT ON CHRISTMAS EVE, AND MY SISTERS, my brother, and I (Francisco Contreras), with our spouses by our sides, sat at the dinner table sharing with my parents the blessings that 1998 had brought us. The after-dinner testimonies, a tradition in the Contreras family, is my mother’s highlight of every year. She is a very devout and committed Christian.

When my turn came to share, I looked into my mom’s eyes and told her that I had decided to get closer to God. Her eyes got misty, a big smile came to her face, and “Amen!” was heard several times around the table. I think I also heard an “It’s about time!” from one of my sisters.

The reason is that I am the black sheep of my family. All my brothersin-law are ministers, only one of whom went to Bible college. The other three left professions in economics, administration, and oncology to serve the Lord, and now each one heads a large ministry in our hometown, Tijuana. My brother, also an oncologist, now dedicates most of his time to preaching the gospel in churches and on radio.

That Christmas Eve my mother, who dedicated me as a child to serve the Lord as a preacher, said with high expectations, “What are you planning to do?”

“I bought a Ducati 1098,” I said.

“What is that?” she cried.

“A racing motorcycle,” I said.

“How,” she asked angrily, “will that get you closer to God?”

“Because, Mother, every time I drag my knee over the pavement while hugging a curve, my body, my soul, and my spirit shout in unison, ‘Oh my God!’”

Aye, it was Francisco, the perennial jokester, who had to break the solemnity of the evening, giving all a chance to enjoy a good laugh. I have ridden motorcycles for many years, which includes amateur races and “track days.” The rush I get from the combination of speed and fear makes my adrenals pump like crazy.

But I’m not entirely unique. There are lots of adrenaline junkies out there. Some get their “high” by doing dangerous stuff, but most get it by physically going “over the edge” through exercise, thus experiencing a natural high. It’s natural, it’s legal, and it’s even godly.
