25. Rune

Rune stared at the closed door for a moment, her heart still thundering in her ears as her lungs heaved for breath. She had never thought a kiss would feel like that.

The minute Bear’s hands had gripped her head, her knees had gone weak. Clutching his arms, she held on to him as his mouth crushed to hers. He had taken advantage of her gasp of surprise, thrusting his tongue into her mouth.

His spicy flavor that reminded her so much of his scent overwhelmed her, stealing her breath as he plundered her mouth with a kiss that claimed her soul. Her heart had already been his, though her mind had tried to fight it, but now all of her belonged to him.

There was no chance for any other alpha. If Bear denied her again at the Agri-ren, she didn’t know what she would do.

“Everything okay?”

Amara’s voice from behind her pulled Rune back to the present, and she turned around to look at the older woman. Worry began to creep in as the daze from the kiss wore off.

“I don’t know. A boy ran up to Bear and told him someone needed him. That there were men coming towards the village. Bear said to stay here.”

Amara’s brows drew together as she hummed.

“It’s not too unusual. Could be an envoy looking to trade, or one of our allies requesting help.”

“He told the boy to run on to get Raider and meet him with men.”

“Oh, well…” Amara trailed off as the crease between her brows deepened. “Maybe we should prepare supplies. Just in case.”

Nodding, Rune moved to the cabinets as Amara levered herself up and made her way over. It didn’t take long for them to restock and prepare all their supplies in case there was an emergency. The only thing left to do was what Rune hated the most.

Wait.

By the time there was a knock on the door, Rune’s stomach was in knots. Amara had sat, silent, working on her sewing the whole time, as Rune tried to focus on her studies.

She had eventually given up and tried to work on patching one of her pants that had popped a seam, but she had no luck there either. Rune had given up and was staring into the fire as her head ran in circles when the knock brought her thoughts to a halt.

Head whipping to the door, she jumped to her feet as it pushed open, expecting an injured man to be brought in. Rune realized it was Bear standing in the doorway, and it took a minute for her heart to relax once she couldn’t find any signs of blood or trauma on him.

Taking a step forward, Amara’s voice stopped her.

“Is everyone okay?”

Bear’s head nodded, but Rune could tell how tense his shoulders were. No one may have been hurt, but that didn’t mean everything had gone well.

“Who was it?” she asked.

Green eyes locking on hers, he let out a sigh.

“Men from the Andtay. There was an incident when we passed through.
