Finding your support crew

Research suggests that those who engage a coach, mentor or sponsor are much more likely to have success in achieving their goals, be exposed to a greater number of career-related opportunities, build and develop skills, be promoted at a fast rate and receive greater remuneration.58 Setting yourself up with a team of experienced and effective coaches, mentors and sponsors – your personal board of directors – gives you greater ability to grow and develop, test your ideas, seek advice and receive support and advocacy. This group of support people can team with you to help you understand and work through the unique challenges you face as a leader. Having a support crew greatly reduces feelings of loneliness and builds relatedness.

Knowing the differences between the roles of coach, mentor and sponsor can assist you with gaining the most from these relationships. In simple terms, a mentor tells, a coach asks and a sponsor advocates. This chapter will also help you recognise the role you can play to get the most out of each relationship and improve your leadership your way. You will be equipped to self-coach your way to designing your own board of directors.
