A Brief History of Mullein

Mullein was used in ancient cultures for protection against evil spirits. The first-century Greek physician Dioscorides used mullein to treat diarrhea. The French used the plant during the Middle Ages to treat boils on horses’ necks. After mullein was introduced to North America by early settlers, many Native Americans quickly adopted the plant for use against coughs, bronchitis, and asthma — applications that research is now confirming as effective.

Growing Mullein

While mullein grows well in hot, dry conditions, it is also found in many other settings. It grows a tall, rod-like stem from which velvety leaves radiate. I’ve never planted mullein from seed or seedling, since it grows wild in my area. The plant grows up to five feet tall and yields small yellow flowers on the top of the stalk. It prefers dry, sandy, or somewhat rocky soil with good drainage and minimal water. If starting seeds indoors, wait until after the first frost to plant seedlings outside. Mullein can also be planted directly outdoors. Because of its size, it is not really suitable for growing indoors, but it could be grown in large pots outdoors.
