Thirty minutes later and Mr. Barker returned to the ward.
âGood newsâ he said, âthe Cardiologist isn't too concerned about your irregular heartbeat and rather than monitor you any further, we can control your heart rate with drugs. So you will be going home today.â
Well, I'm sure that you could hear my jaw drop all the way from Cardio down to Maternity. I gawped at him open mouthed, and checked that my ears weren't playing tricks on me. âDid you just say that I can go home today?â
âYes, we will have all of your wires removed and arrange for some medication that you can take home with you.â
I was completely stunned. Since my surgery, I'd been on a downward spiral as I had watched everyone around me go home, everyone but me that is. I'd even joked with the nurses that I would still be around for the Christmas Party in two months time. But now, completely out of the blue, I had just heard the words that I was starting to believe would never come. And, what had made then even better, was that they had come from the 'main man' himself, Mr. Barker. So, I could be 100% certain (ish) that it was going to happen!
As soon as Mr Barker had left the ward (and at the risk of tempting fate,) I began packing up all my worldly possessions (which was mostly chocolates,) and put them into a 'bag for life' (which I thought was quite appropriate.) I was absolutely delighted and couldn't wait to share the good news with my wife. Mr. Barker, you're a star!
One of the nurses came to see me.
âI've just heard that you will be leaving usâ she said.
âYep, I'm offâ, said I (giving her my best Cheshire Cat smile.)
And just to discourage any thoughts that she may have had about keeping me, I added, âMr. Barker has just told me himself, that I can go.â
âWell, firstly, before we can discharge you, your external pacemaker and all of the monitoring wires will need to be removed. Plus, you will also have to demonstrate to us, that you are capable of looking after yourself, by completing a few simple tasks, including walking up and down a flight of stairs, and being able to shower yourself.â
No worries, I thought, what can be hard about standing under a shower? And I've been going up and down stairs since I was two years old. This will be a breeze (or so I thought).
