Two months later Red and Fayard’s relationship seemed to take a turn. There were rumors that she had been cheating on him. He had gotten into a fight with Eddie LeBlanc and had nearly killed the pretty man.
Red wasn’t nearly as smug now that Olivia wasn’t around and Edina didn’t even acknowledge their existence. Her elaborate revenge plot was no longer working in her benefit. Also, she had created a lot of enemies because everybody liked Edina and her family. She couldn’t even get good weed from Marco because he cut her off.
As school was nearing its end, Edina began to fantasize about getting away from Pepper Mill just as much as she had in the beginning. In fact, her longing for Fayard hadn’t decreased. She dreamed about him every single night. Some dreams were of the house that he was building for him and Red and some was the house that he was building for her. She was happy again, and not going through the motions so that she could pretend for the town that she was okay.
She wasn’t okay.
Sometimes she dreamed that she was Red and she was the one on her knees receiving his dick in her mouth. Her body would come to life in unwanted ways and she’d awaken to find it humming in pleasure. Those were the worst dreams, her body betraying her like that. But everyday that she had to be around others she put on her mask. She walked into Meechee’s with her heart in her throat afraid that she’d see them together, or she’d round the corner at the grocery store and see her laughing with people that were supposed to be Edina’s friends. Other times she’d hear a knock on the door and for a split second think it was Fayard only it was a customer who wanted a charm or medicine.
Olivia called a few times but not often and she wouldn’t write letters because she was afraid that Marco would get them. It was the only time that Edina could be herself, could talk about her feelings and her anguish. It was the same for Olivia.
“The baby moves around so much. It’s going to be the boy.” Olivia said proudly. “The Jordan’s are going to name him Julian. I fucking hate that pretentious name. I never thought I’d have a kid named Julian!” She exclaimed.
Edina didn’t remind her that it wasn’t going to be her kid. “How are you getting along? You good with money?”
“Girl I got enough money to last me a couple lifetimes. Marco slipped a few thousand dollars into my suitcase…I miss that old so-in-so.”
“He loves us.” Edina said.
“I know. I’m doing this to protect him—to protect us all.”
“So how big is your stomach? Big as a basketball?”
“Bigger than that! It’s so big Edina that my belly button disappeared. My stomach is black—black like you!”
“Shut up!” Edina laughed. “It can’t be black.”
“No, I’m not kidding you. My stomach turned black. The doctor says it’s not abnormal for people with my skin tone.
