23 – THE PLEDGE

The next morning, a crowd was gathered outside of the castle gates, protesting King Jason and his stocked up treasures again. Following orders, one of the soldiers selected one of the townspeople to come in and investigate the castle according to their wishes. Leave no stone unturned. The townspeople were cautious and puzzled at first, but eventually elected a leader and sent him off.

The man was escorted through every room in the castle—even the Oracle Stone room, which was considered sacred and inaccessible to people outside the King’s circle. But the man spent most of the morning searching every corner he could. King Jason himself stayed in his bedroom and watched like a hawk as the man went through Saryan’s old things. When he was gone, the King immediately folded everything neatly and put them back where they belonged.

When the man returned to the crowd, he revealed that he found no riches. But that didn’t quell the suspicions of the townspeople. They accused Jason of moving the riches to another location before inviting the man in. They even accused the man of being bought off or threatened, which he denied.

One thing remained: they were still certain that King Jason was hiding something. When the soldiers reported that to him, he wasn’t surprised.

Miles away, Evelyn walked briskly with a cloak over her face to hide it from view. Not that she needed it. In her pocket was a small handful of money—freshly minted from some rusty nails just this morning. She decided to treat herself to some goods on the Northern Market Street today. The fruits and vegetables were always freshest here, and that made them more expensive.

She pushed through the crowd, trying to be conspicuous. It wasn’t too congested today, but enough to be uncomfortable. Perhaps that was a good thing. Easier to blend in.

A cart of booshum berries caught her eye. Her mouth started to water. When she got closer to the cart, she bent over slightly to smell them.

“Don’t you love the smell? We talk about the sweet flavor all the time, but not enough about the smell.”

Evelyn turned to see a cute, petite black-haired woman standing next to her, looking over the cart with a wide grin. Her hair only went down to her shoulders and her cheeks pressed into dimples with her smile.

Evelyn smiled in kind. “Yes, it’s lovely.”

“Between you and me, booshum berries from the Western Woods are even better,” the girl said. “The ones that grow on wild bushes are more tart than sweet.”

“You don’t say.”

The dark-haired girl handed some Pieces to the man at the cart and filled a small satchel. Happily, she cinched it shut and dropped it into a larger tote she carried over her shoulder. Then she touched the stranger on the shoulder, flashed a smile, and said “Have a lovely day!” before she disappeared into the crowd.

Evelyn returned an insincere smile for just a second before dropping some money into the man’s hand and gathering some booshum berries for herself.
